Child Care Center Supports Education
Showcased here is a program at Franklin High School that very many people do not know about the Child Care Center. This center is one of the main reasons why so many students are able to continue their education at Franklin because they can bring their children with them to school. Students feel a sense of security knowing that their children are right down the hallway; they can be there when their child is having a difficult day, when a new milestone is reached, or even just to spend time with them during their lunch hour. The center is fully licensed by the state of Michigan and is staffed with certified paraprofessionals. Lynn Paul, child care director, helps each child learn and grow in a safe and nurturing environment. The room has wonderful spaces created to meet the needs of individual children: an area for infants, one for babies who crawl, and another for toddlers. All food, including formula, breakfast, snack and lunch are provided through the Department of Agriculture. The only things parents need to bring are diapers. This year, 25 children have been registered in our facility.

Christmas Celebration
Christmas at FHS is always a memorable occasion with lots of Bulldog traditions… we made time for some fun activities, a lot of good food, and a visit from “Santa.” First of all, the staff provided, cooked and served our traditional Christmas Breakfast, complete with pancakes, sausages, egg casserole, monkey bread, muffins and juice. Afterwards, students participated in some crazy Christmas games: Christmas Characters, Wrapping Paper Fashion Runway, and Jan’s famous Left-Right game. The pictures here tell it all. Next, we would like to thank our own special “Santa,” the Knights of Columbus from St. Charles Borromeo Church. They came through again this year with a very generous donation which allowed us to purchase Franklin sweatshirts for every student. It was a sea of black and silver. The students appreciated their gift and continue to enjoy the warmth of their sweatshirts throughout this very chilly winter season.

Music Class Comes to Franklin
Franklin High School is very fortunate this year to offer a music class to our students. We have never had a certified music instructor until the arrival of substitute teacher, Tim VanNasdale at the beginning of this school year. Now, as Tim is student teaching in order to finish his education degree, Mr. Kelly Ford is co-teaching the class with him. Students are currently working on note values, rhythms, and general music theory. Pictured here, students echo rhythms played by Mr. Ford on their “drums” 5 gallon paint buckets from Home Depot! They also work with rhythm sticks on loan from Mrs. Mahle at Lincoln Elementary School.

Thanksgiving Feast
Another tradition at FHS is our annual Thanksgiving Feast. The Franklin staff buys, prepares and serves all the traditional Thanksgiving fixings for the entire student body. After singing our “turkey song,” we all sit down together to share a wonderful, home-cooked meal: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. So…with the help school board member Ron Smith who served with the staff, the FHS family celebrated Thanksgiving in the traditional fashion again this year.
