Where Should We Go In Europe?
Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain-these are just a few of the many countries in Europe that the 7th graders in Legg Middle School are planning to visit-someday. In their Social Studies classes they must develop a travel itinerary that visits at least three countries in ten days. Their itinerary includes a transportation schedule, hotel arrangements, sightseeing destinations, entertainment, dining suggestions and a budget for a family of four taking into account the currency exchange rate.
All three 7th grade teams are working on the itineraries. Some students work in teams in each classroom with the jobs of travel agent, concierge, restaurant connoisseur, and trip manager having specific responsibilities. Other students, in the advanced math classes, wear all four hats and will be receiving an additional grade in their math classes.
Students have been working on the computers in the library and classrooms, using travel books and taking copious notes. They have also been able to work before and after school in the LMS library with their new extended hours.
Teams will be combining all their travel information and tips into one written presentation using Word, PowerPoint or Publisher.
Comments can be heard about how expensive this or that is or how can I get from here to there or what is this food or I want to see both this concert and this museum but they are only open at the same times and are too many kilometers apart. The 7th graders are becoming quite adept at accessing travel sites on the web and comparison shopping is becoming an art. In other words, Social Studies (and Math) are bringing Europe to our Legg Middle School 7th graders.
